Welcome to this short series on how to study the Bible. What is this all about? What are we going to cover?

I think that there is a difference between reading the Bible and studying it. Simply reading the Bible is of great value, and it will do you good. Studying it, however, will open up new understanding, and hopefully bring new life to the words on the page.

In this small series we’ll look at some practical tips, the sort of questions to ask when studying scripture, and even how not to approach the word of God.

The sessions are:

  1. Why study the Bible?

  2. The importance of Context

  3. Studying the Gospels & Letters

  4. How to use the original language

  5. Looking for connections

I’d encourage you to tackle these when you have time to explore some of the practical tips, make time to have a go. I won't be presenting my studies here, but hopefully providing you with some tools to do your own study.

In some sessions I may mention books or resources that would be useful. Don’t worry if you don’t have such things. Equivalents can often be found free to use on-line. If I know of such services I will try to link to them or at least mention them. To get started one service to become familiar with is biblegateway.com as this provides many of the tools that are useful in following this "How To" series.

Before we dive in, I just want to be clear that I am sharing tips and practices that I find useful in the hope you do too. I am not implying this is the only way, the right way, or the best way to study the Bible. I simply hope my experiences may help you.
